Nestled in a secluded and idyllic oasis among the rolling hills of West Marin, this award-wining modern ranch designed for an active family of five prioritized low-key comfort and flexible, approachable spaces. Making the new construction feel more lived-in, we gave it a vintage farmhouse quality, relevant to the client's lifestyle and plans to enjoy every space within it.

Working with highly respected Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects, we followed their lead in our approach to the full furnishings scheme by letting the landscape guide the design, creating a seamless blend between the exterior and interior. With our signature use of rich color, we pulled the palette of yellows, greens, and blues directly from the windswept grasses, mossy knolls, rolling hills, and crisp, clear sky of the home’s surroundings, cohesively carrying them in varying hues across the courtyard of buildings with subtle nuance.

Taking a clean, modern approach to the rustic locale with unexpected materials, we used tactile cerused oak finishes, glazed and crackled lava stone tabletops, and furniture customized from wood collected on the property during the renovation.

Intended to be filled with children and regular weekend guests within a laid-back setting, the home has a uniquely playful, warm feel. Clever storage solutions and practical space planning assured that it would and it has continued to be maintainable after we handed over the keys.
