Full Circle - Golden Gate Edwardian REFRESH
When the youngest son left for college, we bid our clients farewell as the empty nesters went traveling and we embarked on a top to bottom total refresh of their home. Almost 15 years earlier, we had helped design a complete gut and remodel of the 4-level 5 bedroom, 4 bath, 3800 SF home to accommodate the young family of five, instilling it with a cozy mid-century modern vibe in a cheerful palette of oranges, blues and warm woods like teak and walnut, and plenty of custom cabinetry throughout. Fast forward to the present, with the kids out of the house, the clients longed for a more calming environment, opting for white paint to freshen up the spaces throughout and sprucing up a bulk of their existing furnishings.
Rather than invest in all new furniture, the clients opted to sustainably update most of their pieces, whether repainting a sideboard in a softer hue, refinishing their beat up dining table, or reupholstering vintage frames in fresh patterns and colors. The initial investment in heirloom quality furniture 15 years earlier meant that the "bones" of each of the pieces were still in great shape, albeit soiled or scratched.
Several new items were sourced to mix in with the reworked pieces to elevate a few special areas, namely the primary bedroom; with a soft, botanical-patterned cork wallpaper and soft alpaca rug underfoot, this room transformed into a soothing sanctuary. We revamped the placement of the family's extensive art collection, from museum-quality photography and an inherited bronze nude to kitschy paintings by emerging Bay Area artists, each piece informing the mood of each area.
With lots of careful planning, we were able to complete this refresh in time to hand it back to the family for the winter holiday season. The clients were ecstatic with the results: “We keep traveling and every time we come home, I’m blown away by how gorgeous everything looks and how comfortable it all is.”
